What is MedPay?
Aug. 20, 2021
Car accidents tend to cause not only physical injuries, but extreme financial hardship. Make sure you have some type of car insurance coverage to help pay for your medical bills if you become a victim of a car crash. This article talks about one option: MedPay.
What is MedPay?
Medical Payment Coverage can pay for your medical expenses in an automobile-related injury, regardless of who was at fault for the automobile accident. It is important to note that MedPay does not replace health insurance. MedPay just helps pay your bills after a car accident, and MedPay can help pay your copay or deductible, while health insurance does not. MedPay is not required in Kansas or Missouri. Because Kansas Requires PIP and Missouri does not allow PIP, MedPay is more common in Missouri than Kansas.
What does MedPay Cover?
MedPay covers costs of medical treatment, such as doctor visits, surgery, X-rays, EMT and ambulance services, hospital stays, etc. It does not help you pay the other costs that are caused by the car crash, such as property damage, childcare, or lost wages.
The MedPay coverage limited depends on your policy.
Who does MedPay Cover?
Your MedPay coverage can cover the medical payments after a car accident for you, your family, your employees, passengers in your car.
What’s the Difference Between MedPay and PIP?
(For information about PIP, check out our article: What is PIP?)
These two forms of coverage are similar because both help pay your medical bills for an injury related to a car accident regardless of who caused the car accident. However, these two coverages are different.
States vary on whether they require PIP, do not allow PIP, or allow PIP but do not require PIP. MedPay is an option in all states.
PIP will cover costs caused by the car crash, such as childcare, essential household services, or lost wages. MedPay does not cover these expenses, only medical payments.
