Our Top Travel Tips for A Safe Thanksgiving

Grover Law Firm, LLC May 11, 2021

Many of us will be traveling to visit our families and friends for Thanksgiving. Use these tips to ensure you make it safely to your destination and back home again.

Safety First at Home

First things first, make sure you’re leaving your home in safe conditions. That means not posting about your travel plans on social media, which burglars can use to scope out empty houses. Have a friend or family member pop over once a day to make sure everything is as it should be. You can even call your police department’s non-emergency number and request to have an officer do a drive-by during the time period you’re going to be away from home.

Of course, the best defense of all is a monitored home security system. Just make sure you leave the company information and any pass codes with a trusted friend or family member in case of an emergency.

Other precautions: put your mail and newspaper deliveries on hold, or ask a friend or family member to stop by once a day and pick up delivered items. Consider investing in motion-sensor or timer lights. If you’re leaving a car behind outside, consider having a friend move it occasionally.

Safety on the Road

Your first order of business is to make sure your car is in good working order. Make sure your tires are in good condition and that you’re up to date on maintenance such as oil changes. Also make sure you leave with a full tank of gas and that you’re filled up on windshield wiper fluid.

Once you’re actually on the road, make sure everyone is buckled up. Yes, even the kids in the backseat of the minivan. No matter how much they complain about wanting to be comfortable, it’s more important than they arrive alive and uninjured! Unbuckled bodies can also fly around a car in an accident, causing injuries to other passengers, so it’s not just about a single individual’s safety.

Obey traffic laws and drive defensively — not aggressively. Even though traffic can be frustrating, it’s important to remain calm. Turn on some holiday tunes or play some road trip games with your family — as long as they won’t distract you from driving. Have someone hold your cell phone or navigation system for you rather than trying to look at them yourself.

  1. First things first, take care of your injuries. Apply first aid or call an ambulance if necessary, and see a doctor as soon as possible.

  2. Secondly, call a lawyer. The sooner you call a professional attorney to help with your personal injury lawsuit, the less likely you are to miss any important facts or steps in the process — and that betters your chances for success.

  3. Third, document all injuries and property damage, and collect witness accounts and contact information.

  4. Fourth, open a claim with the responsible company’s insurance company — but do NOT give statements or sign anything (other than for the police) until your lawyer gives the go-ahead.
