How to Stay Safe on The Road This Labor Day Weekend

Grover Law Firm, LLC May 11, 2021

Labor Day weekend is one of the biggest travel holidays of the year, but it’s also one of the deadliest when it comes to traffic fatalities. Use the safe driving tips below to ensure a safe Labor Day weekend for you, your family, and everyone else on the road.

#1: Don’t Drink & Drive

This one is obvious, but statistics show that it’s worth repeating. In addition to being extremely unsafe, law enforcement officials are typically out and about in full force and focusing on looking for impaired drivers. If you’re going to be drinking, limit yourself to two or three servings of alcohol, and have your last drink two hours before you plan to hit the road again. Better yet, have a designated driver who won’t be drinking at all.

#2: Wear Your Seatbelt

There’s no getting around it: wearing your seatbelt is much more likely to save your life than not wearing it. And on top of that, it’s the law. The importance of wearing your seatbelt isn’t just about your safety either — it’s about the safety of everyone else in the car with you. During an accident, if you’re not buckled in, you can injure other passengers. So, for your own sake and the sake of your family, wear your seatbelt, and make sure every single family member — even the teens in the backseat of the minivan — are wearing their seatbelts.

#3: Don’t Drive Distracted

Just because you’re not drinking and driving doesn’t mean others on the road are employing the same safe habits. Beyond that, there are plenty of unexpected obstacles that can cause an accident if you’re not paying attention to the road because you’re looking at your phone or otherwise dividing your mental focus. Stay safe by putting your phone out of reach if necessary. You can’t be a good defensive driver while distracted.

#4: Don’t Speed

If you’re on a schedule, allow plenty of time to get to your destination. If you’re traveling long-distance, make sure to include extra time for unexpected bathroom stops and traffic. Planning ahead for the unexpected will lessen your frustration. And if you don’t end up needing the extra time, take it as an incentive to take a few detours along the way. What’s a road trip without stopping to see the World’s Biggest Ball of Twine?
